Gambier committee asks staff to review bylaw stop-work options
The committee requested a review of Islands Trust policies after discussing how enforcement handles activities that continue while a planning application is considered.

The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee asked staff to review Islands Trust policies on bylaw-infraction stop-work options and report back at a future meeting this year.[1]
The request followed discussion of correspondence about an unauthorized glamping operation and the policy that gives an operator 90 days to comply with the Land Use Bylaw or pursue a planning application. The Bylaw Enforcement Officer said the policy had worked well and was considered a best practice; he also said immediate legal action could be taken if there was an immediate threat to the environment, health or safety.[1]
The minutes say the officer observed two tents and two platforms during a May 31 site visit and described the impact on the property at that time as minimal. Trustees discussed whether the policy should allow more flexibility when a land use may be non-compliant and developing rapidly.[1]
The committee also endorsed a revised project charter for its Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw targeted review, and requested a public communication outlining work to date, future opportunities for community input and First Nations engagement.[1]
