Gambier trustees approve expanded public engagement for bylaw review

The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee endorsed a public engagement workplan for its Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw review and asked staff to refer it to the Advisory Planning Commission. [1] The committee also requested confirmation that members could support up to 10 community discussion groups between August and October 2025. [1]
The decision followed public comments requesting more time, clearer materials and broader consultation, including a request to delay the review by one year. [1] The minutes record concerns that the process was moving quickly, that residents in different parts of Gambier had different issues, and that water-access residents felt left out. [1]
Trustees said the engagement should include initial proposed bylaw language while making clear that the language was a starting point rather than final wording. [1] The committee also noted that different meeting styles, locations and times should be considered. [1]
The committee requested a report for its September 9, 2025 meeting on options concerning accessory-building regulations and related jurisdictional issues involving the Local Trust Committee, the Sunshine Coast Regional District and the province. [1]
The committee adopted a Bylaw Compliance and Enforcement Policy and directed staff to prepare a draft decision that would limit investigations to infractions identified in a complaint and require reports on files closed because they were vexatious. [1] It also approved three readings of an amendment to the Bylaw Enforcement Notification Bylaw after rescinding earlier readings because the bylaw had not been quoted properly. [1]
