Gambier shoreline permit proposal moves to public feedback

The draft Gambier Shoreline Development Permit Area would apply to a proposed 30-meter buffer upland and seaward from the natural boundary of the sea, but no decision was made at the August 4 meeting. [1] The minutes say the buffer is not a new setback, park designation, guaranteed public access or prohibition on development. [1]
The draft could require permits for new dwellings, major additions, lot subdivisions, shoreline protection works and significant land alterations or excavations within the area, subject to listed exemptions. [1] The guidelines would favour approaches that work with nature and “softer” solutions over harder shoreline armouring where possible. [1]
Staff said the draft followed 2022 community engagement, recommendations from the Gambier Island Advisory Planning Commission and engagement with Squamish Nation.
