Gambier committee pauses OCP and land-use bylaw engagement
The committee will consider Squamish Nation staff comments and draft amendments at its November 25 meeting before public engagement resumes.

The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee paused public engagement on targeted Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw amendments until it considers Squamish Nation staff comments on a draft shoreline Development Permit Area and a draft Heritage Conservation Area; staff are to present the drafts and referral comments at the November 25 meeting.[1]
The minutes record that staff supported pausing engagement because of the potential for confusion without draft language available, and that the Advisory Planning Commission recommended preparing draft changes before further public engagement.[1]
Trustee Kate-Louise Stamford said she was concerned about further delaying engagement, but also said overlapping consultations made it difficult to communicate what was being considered; she said clear information was needed so residents would know what was under review.[1]
The minutes say Squamish Nation staff recommended a minimum 30-metre buffer for the shoreline proposal, with a preference for the committee to consider 50 metres, alongside shoreline protections and soft-shore approaches.[1] The committee also allocated $8,000 toward communication and public engagement on potential draft bylaw language.[1]
The committee separately deferred its response to Trust Council’s Policy Statement Bylaw No. 183 referral until its January 27, 2026 meeting; staff said the response deadline had been extended to before February 6, 2026.[1]
