The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee endorsed several priorities for its Official Community Plan review, including adding references to Squamish Nation place names and reconciliation, and recognizing the effects of settlement and development on First Nations rights and title.[1]

The committee also endorsed keeping existing climate-change policies, adding references to reduced access to harvest areas and food insecurity, aligning with neighbouring communities’ zero-net-emissions targets, and separating stormwater and water-conservation objectives.[1]

On biodiversity, the committee endorsed exploring requirements for archaeological assessments and biophysical inventories for some rezoning applications, and using a development permit area to ensure new or renovated docks follow Howe Sound Biosphere Region dock policy.[1]

The minutes say the planner would prepare recommendations for the committee’s consideration at its October 2024 meeting; further discussion of the review was deferred to the next business meeting.[1]

At the meeting, Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society executive director Ruth Simmons asked the committee to collaborate on confirming data, consider zoning to strengthen conservation, and prioritize rezoning Sunshine Coast Regional District parks from rural residential to align with their protections.[1]
