The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee declined to opt in to the province’s short-term rental principal-residence requirement and asked staff to analyse the issue before the 2025 statutory deadline.[1] The committee also asked that the analysis use relevant findings from the Regional Planning Team.[1]

The decision followed discussion of a provincial deadline to opt in by the end of March or defer to a future cycle, and of the time needed to review the legislation across four land-use bylaws.[1]

Staff advised that short-term vacation rentals are not permitted on Keats Island; on Gambier and the Associated Islands, the resident, owner or operator must reside in the home; and on Bowyer and Passage Islands, short-term rental is permitted as a home occupation.[1]
