The bylaw would allow telecommunication utilities in Keats Island’s Marine General zone, and the Gambier Island Local Trust Committee sent it to the Islands Trust Executive Committee for approval after giving it three readings on Jan. 9.[1]

The committee amended the draft to add telecommunication utilities as a permitted use, made the amendment its first-priority minor project and paused the current minor project.[1]

Staff said the earliest likely completion under the usual process was three to six months, while meeting the Connected Coast deadline of March 2024 would require an expedited process.[1]

The committee referred the draft to First Nations, local governments and agencies, including Fisheries and Oceans Canada, for comment.[1]

Trustee Joe Bernardo said the usual process was preferable and that the expedited route should not be viewed as a precedent; he said the committee had departed from it because of the risk of missing the opportunity for Keats Island to access broadband internet.[1]
